Insulation removal safety
When old insulation has to come out, doing it right matters more than doing it fast.
What you'll learn
- Why vermiculite from before 1990 may contain asbestos
- How to identify rodent contamination versus normal wear
- What proper PPE looks like (respirator, suit, gloves, hood)
- How to handle disposal of biohazard or asbestos material
Step by step
- Inspect the attic with a flashlight — look for droppings, nests, water staining, and material type.
- If material is gray and pebble-like, stop. May be vermiculite. Test before disturbing.
- For confirmed rodent contamination, treat as biohazard. Full PPE, sealed bags.
- Use a high-volume vacuum extractor — do not bag-and-carry through the house.
- Sanitize the attic deck after removal. Reinsulate only after pest entry points are sealed.
Safety note
We do not remove asbestos-containing material. If vermiculite tests positive, we refer you to a licensed abatement contractor before reinsulating.
