Rigid Foam

Rigid foam board insulation, installed right.

Rigid foam handles thermal bridging — the heat that bleeds through studs and rafters. We install EPS, XPS, or polyiso continuous insulation on exterior walls, under flat or low-slope roofs, on the underside of slabs, and as a thermal break under siding. Detail work matters more than the boards.

What do homeowners ask about Rigid Foam?

EPS, XPS, or polyiso — which board?

EPS is cheapest and vapor-permeable; good for exterior walls and below grade. XPS has higher R per inch and resists moisture; common on roofs and under slabs. Polyiso has the highest R per inch but loses some R in cold weather — fine in San Diego where it rarely gets that cold. We pick based on assembly and budget.

Will adding rigid foam mess up my windows and doors?

It pushes the wall plane out. We extend window and door jambs with proper trim, flash to drainage planes, and detail water management. This is normal exterior-insulation work and we plan for it on the quote.

Can rigid foam go under my floor?

Yes. We install rigid foam on the underside of subfloor over crawl, or on top of slabs before a new finish floor. R-5 to R-10 under a slab makes a noticeable comfort difference inland.

Homeowners who hired us for this

We had R-13 batts from 1979 that had settled to nothing. Crew air-sealed top plates first, then blew cellulose to R-49. Upstairs bedrooms feel different now — the AC actually keeps up on hot afternoons.

Got three quotes. Thermal Pro was the only one who recommended air-sealing before insulation and pushed for the radiant barrier given the East County heat. Bill dropped 18 percent in the first August. Worth every dollar.

Our vaulted ceiling was the hottest room in the house. Closed-cell foam at the roof deck completely changed the room. Crew masked everything carefully, came back to check the cure, walked us through the reoccupancy timeline. Professional all the way.
